How strange that it isn't microwave proof. I have a couple of Oneida coffee mugs that I cannot use in the microwave even though they say microwave safe on the bottom. One got extremely hot in just one minute of reheat time and caused very painful blisters. I couldn't set the coffee mug down quick enough. Glad you were able to replace your bowl. It looks handy and I love the red color.
