Hi Patty-
ReplyDeleteI made oodles of troughs about 5 years ago. They have been outside every winter. Only one of them broke. Right now I have them lined up in a garden. I need some inspiration to use them again!

Hi Patty-
ReplyDeleteHere's my recipe for the cement troughs:
- 1 47 pound bag of Portland cement.
- 2 eight quart bags of perlite
- equal by volume of peat moss (equal to the above two mixtures)
- water to mix it up til like cottage cheese. Mix it up in a wheel barrow. Wear plastic gloves.
Form over plastic containers, or like you did-over a hole in the ground-you can line the hole with sand.
I made the walls of the troughs about 2 inches thick. If you don't cover the plastic forms-the cement will stick. Cover the wet creation with plastic bags so it will dry slowly (this is important!)
Also-my Dad said Portland cement is the best, and going by the longevity of my troughs, I think he's right!
Love, Debra
PS I'll post pics of them!
